Types of Museums

A museum is a permanent building, place, or institution dedicated in the service of society. It is committed to acquire, preserve, conserve, research and interpreting tangible and intangible evidence of humans heritage and its environment. Museums mainly serve the purpose of education, study, and enjoyment through collection and caring of objects of scientific, artistic, or historical importance and displaying it for public viewing through exhibitions. Some museums also impart programs, lectures, tutorials and other such activities for adults, children, and families, as well as those for more specific professions like archeology. Some museums have artifacts that are hard to find as these objects date back as early as the 2nd century.

There are different types of museums like art museums, general or multidisciplinary museums, history and natural-history museums, science and technology museums, archaeology, anthropology and ethnology, museums among others. An Art museum, commonly known as an art gallery, exhibits different kinds of art objects including the visual arts like paintings, illustrations, and sculpture, besides collections of drawings and applied art, including ceramics, metalwork, furniture, and artist’s books among others. They also exhibit agricultural artifacts, antiques, documents and memorabilia which are specifically related to the history of the region they are located in. Some of the famous art museums are the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, established in 1764, the Louvre in Paris, France established in 1793.

History museums cover, preserve and interpret the knowledge of history and its importance to the present and future. It also preserves the material evidence of the human race, human activity, and the natural world having evident origins in large collections built up by individuals and groups before the modern era. These types of museums preserve a large variety of objects like documents, different kinds of artifacts, art, archaeological objects, antiquities and archaeological findings. Natural history museums are engaged in the conservation of nature and natural resources, education and research in natural history. Many of these museums are interactive and range from the volcano experience to the dinosaurs exhibition, earth’s treasury and more.

Science and technology museums demonstrate how science plays a role in everyday life and impacts the things carried out by us. Science museums and technology museums give details and explain complicated inventions via a combination of demonstrations, interactive programs and thought-provoking media. These museums generally conduct programs on topics including computers, aviation, railway museums, physics, astronomy, and the animal kingdom. Some of the famous science museums are the Science Museum on Exhibition Road, South Kensington, London and the National Science and Technology Museum in Madrid.
