The game of basketball is one of the most popular and widely viewed sports in the world. It is simple game to play and enjoy which was invented over a hundred and fifteen years ago. Basketball is a game that is generally played at professional, collegiate, and amateur levels. Basketball games are played in four quarters of 10 or 12 minutes. The game involves the use of a basketball court, ball, and basketball hoops. It is played by two teams with five active players each.

Both the teams are designated with a hoop at each end of the court. Each team attempts to score points against one another by propelling a ball through a 10 feet high hoop or the goal following organized rules. Each time the basketball is successfully thrown at the 10 feet hoop and goes through the team gets a score. This is called “making a basket.” Each “goal” or “basket” is worth two points. The ball can be advanced on the court by either dribbling or passing it between teammates. Dribbling is taking the ball and bouncing it on the floor in a continuous motion. The dribble ends when you stop and hold the ball.

The team which possesses the ball is called the offense team, while the other team is called the defense team. The offense teams objective is to score points by trying to get the ball through the hoop of the defending team’s basket, while the defense team’s aim is to stop the other team from scoring by either stealing the ball or blocking a shot. This can be done by either intercepting a pass or stealing the ball during someone’s dribble. In case the defensive team succeeds in getting the possession of the ball without the offensive team scoring, it is called a turnover. After each shot is made, possession of the ball changes to the other team. Recovering of missed shots by either team is called “rebounding” and is a major part in the game as it can create more scoring opportunities for your team while limiting your opponents scoring chances

However if any of the players touches, shoulders, pushes, or make direct physical contact with a player in possession of the ball or blocks a shot illegally, then it is considered a foul on a defensive team and the offensive team is allowed making a basket with no interference. Likewise, in case a foul is performed by the offense team, then possession of the ball goes to the defense team. Each team is allowed only five fouls per game.
